five year wedding anniversary

Five years ago today, I said, “I do” with the biggest smile on my face… which means a little over seven years ago I met this amazing man that forever changed my life.

Grab some tissues.  This about is about get emotional!

Five years ago today, Ben and I were married. We said I do on August 9, 2008, but met on June 6, 2006.  These have been the best seven years of my life.

The above picture was taken the summer we met.  It’s the first picture I have of the two of us.  It’s from June 2006 and was taken in my parents house.  I had no idea, when this picture was taken, that I would fall in love with this boy and marry him two years later.  I had no idea, when this picture was taken, that we would buy a house and start a family.  I had no idea, when this picture was taken, that he would be my then and my now and my forever.

I met Ben the summer we both graduated college.  I really don’t know how we hadn’t met before.  We had the same circle of friends.  He was friends with my best friends cousin.  How hadn’t we crossed paths somewhere along the line?
One Thursday evening (I’ll never forget the date, June 6, 2006), I was out with my group of friends.  Ben had called his friend (my friends cousin) to see what he was doing.  Ben was still living at State College for the summer but had come home for the weekend.  He decided to join us and I am so glad that he did.

Ben and I have been together since that night.  Literally.

About a month later, he was in Virginia Beach on vacation with our friends.  Ben texted me and said he was bored.  He asked if I could come down for the weekend.  I had nothing better to do, so I hopped in my car and drove the 8 hours down.  I kind of miss being spontaneous like that.

We had our first official date at The Raven in Virginia Beach.  We stayed up all night talking and fishing and walking on the beach until 4am.  And then, when we got back into town, we were completely inseparable.  Happy Hours and dancing at the Matrix until 2am and staying up all night talking.  I had fallen in love.
In May 2007, Ben took me to Las Vegas and proposed to me.  We spent the next fifteen months planning our August 2008 wedding.  It was one of the best days of my life.

Five years doesn’t sound like a very long time when you say “five years”.  Neither does seven, really, when you think about it.   Together we’ve bought a house.  Survived medical emergencies.  Unexpected deaths of our friends and family.  Stayed afloat during a layoff and unemployment.  Started a business.  Endured fertility treatments and suffered two miscarriages.  In the seven years we’ve been together, and the five we’ve been married, we’ve laughed together, cried together, seen the world, started a family and grown together.

My little family, Summer 2013

Seven years ago this summer I met my husband.  Five years ago today I married him.  And in two months, we celebrate our daughters second birthday.

How did I get so lucky?
