stationery guide: invitation basics

Now that you have a date and location secured, it’s time to get started on your wedding invitations!

There are three major components of your wedding suite:  an invitation, a response card, and an enclosure card.

Your invitation is the most important part of your stationery suite. It will include all the information about your ceremony — who is hosting, who is getting married, your wedding date, as well as the time and location of the ceremony.

Your invitation wording is based on personal preference and whether or not you’re having a formal or a casual service.

Your wedding invitations come in three common sizes:
5” x 7” rectangular
5.5” x 5.5”* square requires extra postage due to shape
4”x9” tea length

Response Cards are most commonly sized at 3.5” x 5”.  While response cards can be at a post card size, note that postcards must meet USPS standards.

Response cards are used to notify the bride and groom who will or will not be attending their wedding, making them the second most important piece of your invitation suite.

Enclosure Cards are also sized at 3.5” x 5”.
Enclosure cards are most commonly used to inform guests of accommodations, the reception location and/or directions to the ceremony and reception. Oftentimes, a directions card  will also include a map.

In addition to the invitation components, there are three common types of invitations: flat, layered and pocketfold.
